There's a friendly competition in the band, but when you open that up the bar is raised even higher and everyone has to bring it. I think it caused an explosion of creativity in the band. In songwriting and making music everyone has such a radically different approach to it and you get to learn little tricks and the thought processes between the decisions they make and integrate that into your own thought processes. 'The cool thing about collaborating, whether it's with a producer or a writer, is you get to get inside their brains and see how they approach it. Valentine says 'Jagger' 'opened the floodgates' for collaborations. Maroon 5 performed the song on 'The Voice' with Levine's fellow judge Christina Aguilera, which helped sell the song to the world. After our third record we needed to try something different.' Bands go through natural creative cycles. We felt like we were in a creative rut at that point, which happens with bands. 'He said, 'Hey, this is something completely different.' But we were down to try something completely different. Levine made some additions to the song and brought it to the band. 'It had been turned down by a couple of artists and he said, 'We could cut that as a Maroon 5 song.' ' Valentine says Levine was in the studio adding guest vocals to the Gym Class Heroes' song 'Stereo Hearts' and Benny Blanco happened to play Levine a demo of 'Moves Like Jagger.'

The first song that the band recorded that the members didn't write was 'Moves Like Jagger,' what has since become the band's defining hit. 'That was weird, because we took great pride in the fact that we wrote every note on the record and we never even considered collaborating with anyone else,' says Valentine.

Accepting outside songwriters' songs and collaborations seems to have been a good decision, too. It was the one time in my life that I knew what to do.' I can barely decide what to order at a restaurant, but I just knew this was the right decision for me. But from the first time I saw Kara's Flowers I just had this strange knowledge from somewhere very deep inside that I was going to be in this band and it was the right thing to do. That was a really tough decision to leave that band, because I felt loyal to my compadres from Nebraska. 'I was essentially poached from that band and then we became Maroon 5. He moved to Los Angles with two friends with whom he'd started a band.

I thought, 'Well, I want to be a professional musician, but I probably won't, so I'm going to go to college and study advertising, because maybe that's a more sensible career.' But the whole time, even in college, I was playing in five different bands and music was my life, but I got a few breaks and ended up out in L.A. 'I look back at that kid and I was a very pragmatic, reasonable kid. 'I didn't think it was actually going to be possible,' he says. He says he always knew he wanted a career in music. Dusick left the band in 2006 and members Matt Flynn and PJ Morton have since joined the group. The band's major label debut didn't sell well and, after a hiatus, the group sought Valentine to flesh out the band and the band took on the new name Maroon 5. Members Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden and Ryan Dusick had formed the group Kara's Flowers in Los Angeles in 1994 and signed with Reprise Records. We had all those songs out there, but I think as people got to know Adam as a person they started to connect as, 'Oh, that's the guy from that band and they sing this song and this song and this song.' It was kind of a multiplier effect.' 'We thought that was maybe an awful idea! But that helped people connect the dots. 'Adam joining up on 'The Voice' (in 2011), we really had no idea that would be such a positive for the band,' says Valentine. The band became nationally known in 2002 with the album 'Songs About Jane' and had hits with the songs 'Harder To Breathe,' 'This Love,' 'She Will Be Loved' and 'Sunday Morning.' With the release of the band's follow-up album, 'It Won't Be Soon Before Long,' the group had another stack of hits and earned a 2005 Grammy for Best New Artist, but Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine says it was lead singer Adam Levine's commitment to television that really put them over the top. If any band seems to have figured things out, it's Maroon 5.
